Press Release
Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedweg
My Name On Your Lips / Because I Might Lose

Saturday 12th of July, 2003, 10:00 PM-1:00 AM, a one night event at Unit 8, 11 Long Street, London, E2 8HN. (between Kingsland and Hackney Road, nearest tube Old Street).

24/7 is privileged to present a one-night event by Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedweg. Working together since 1993, Dias & Riedweg execute together poetical actions that rethink the connection between ethics and aesthetics through precise interventions that investigate how private psychologies affect public space and viceversa. “We understand Art as a subversion of Culture, in order to create a field of action where the meanings and the state of things are constantly revised”. Working with the Other through interactive and interfering processes, their work is not aimed to judge, classify, teach, cure, improve or even change anything in the Other’s life. “We understand our work mainly as meetings with the Other”.

“My name on your Lips” focuses in the borderline between public and private spheres of the memory of love. The two videos feature the project’s participants whose mouths were filmed from very close: old and young mouths, poor and wealth, dull and thoughtful, gap-toothed and healthy, beautiful and ugly mouths of men and women of several social classes and ages, filmed in Rio de Janeiro during the period of New Year’s passage of 2000/2001. All mouths tell the same, something somewhat discreet and fragile, almost a secret, about the remembrance of love throughout their lives: the names of the people with whom they have slept with.

“Because I might lose“ is also a two video installation with the aim to locate the theme of body and risk within the urban public space -the anonymous but real spectator- of a mass of people who daily go through the city.

Both video installation’s soundtrack will be improvised by DJ Armando Peru and Seb Puchito directly upon the videos.

Maurício Dias was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil on October 27th, 1964; Walter Riedweg in Lucerne, Switzerland on December 26th, 1955. Dias & Riedweg live and work in Rio de Janeiro. Their first monographic exhibition “The other begins where our senses meet the world” at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro (Oct.-Dec. 2002) was curated by Catherine David and will be shown at MACBA, Barcelona (Novt. 03-Feb 04). They are currently working on new art commissions for MACBA/Barcelona, FACT/Liverpool, Kunstprojekte Riem/Munich and Goethe Institute/Argentina.

24/7 is an international mobile and mutant low budget gallery.
This exhibition would not have been possible without the support of Mr. F. Arias, Mr. F. Ferrari and Mr. M. Grosso.
